About TileBuddy
TileBuddy is a free scoring companion app for Hong Kong Mahjong. It handles the math so you can focus on the game.
What it does
- Score tracking — log each round's faan and keep a running total for all four players.
- AI tile scanning — snap a photo of your tiles and get your faan calculated automatically.
- Payment settlement — see exactly who owes whom at the end of a session.
- Hand reference wiki — browse every hand pattern with faan values, all available offline.
- Game history — review past sessions, stats, and trends over time.
Supported hand sets
TileBuddy supports the three most common Hong Kong Mahjong hand sets: Classic, New 6, and New 18. Switch between them at any time.
Why I built it
I grew up in Vancouver, Canada. Mahjong was always around at family gatherings but I never really knew how to play. I'd watch my grandparents and family play but i always felt intimitated to play.
Eventually I properly sat down and learned but, when I tried to get friends into it, the same thing kept coming up. Mahjong scoring is sooo hard! Faan values, payment tables, limit hands. Most people gave up before they feel the thrill of the game.
I built TileBuddy so the scoring stops being the reason people don't play. A lot of my friends grew up the same way I did, wanting to connect with a game their family played but not quite knowing how. Hopefully this helps!

Free to use
The core app — scoring, tracking, wiki, and game history — is completely free. AI tile scanning includes 4 free scans per day, with an optional subscription for up to 50 scans per day.
