How scoring works

Frequently asked

What exactly is a faan?+
Faan is the scoring unit of Hong Kong Mahjong. Every scoring pattern in your winning hand is worth a number of faan, and you add them up. Payout climbs steeply with faan — it roughly doubles each step — so the gap between a 3-faan and an 8-faan hand is enormous.
What's the difference between Classic, New 6, and New 18?+
They're three rule styles. Classic (舊章) is the traditional set most players learn first. New 6 and New 18 are modern “new chapter” rule sets that recognize progressively more special hands — New 18 being the most expansive. The foundation hands score the same across all three; the styles differ mainly in the advanced patterns. Use the HK rule style filter above to narrow the list.
What's a limit hand?+
A limit hand is one valuable enough to hit the table's agreed maximum payout — the top of the scale — no matter how many faan it technically scores. Big Four Winds, Thirteen Orphans, and Nine Gates are classic examples.
Why doesn't this page list payouts in money?+
Because faan is consistent, but money isn't. Tables use different stakes, doubling schemes, and caps, so the same hand can pay out very differently from one group to the next. We list faan — the part everyone agrees on — and keep the base-unit conversion on the payment table.

Don't count faan by hand — let TileBuddy score it.
