Hong Kong Mahjong Payment Table

The Hong Kong Mahjong payment table maps a winning hand's total faan to a payout in base units. The base unit is set by the table before play (commonly $1, $10, or HK$10). Multiply the base unit by the table value below to get the actual payment.

Faan → base units

Faan Base units Discarder pays
0 1 2
1 2 4
2 4 8
3 8 16
4 16 32
5 24 48
6 32 64
7 48 96
8 64 128
9 96 192
10 128 256
11 192 384
12 256 512
13 384 768

Payment rules

  • Self-draw (自摸): all three losers pay the full base-unit amount. Total received = 3 × units.
  • Discard win (食糊): the discarder pays double; the other two losers each pay single. Total received = 4 × units.
  • Dealer (莊家): the dealer always pays double or receives double, regardless of self-draw or discard.
  • Doubling stops at 10 faan on standard tables — payouts above 10 faan increase by fixed steps to 384 units (limit hand) at 13 faan.

Worked examples

3 faan, self-draw, base unit $10

Each loser pays 8 × $10 = $80. Winner receives $80 × 3 = $240.

5 faan, discard, base unit $10

Discarder pays 24 × $10 × 2 = $480. Other two losers each pay 24 × $10 = $240. Winner receives $480 + $240 + $240 = $960.

13 faan limit hand, self-draw, dealer wins, base unit $10

Dealer doubling applies — each loser pays 384 × $10 × 2 = $7,680. Winner receives $23,040.
